पिता लक्ष्मण गवाते ने पत्रकारों से कहा कि वह कॉलेज में पढ़ता था तभी से ही सेना में भर्ती होना चाहता था। हालांकि हम सब मना करते थे कि आर्मी में नहीं जाना है। बीकॉम की डिग्री हासिल करने के बाद वो सेना में भर्ती हो गया।

गवाते ने कहा, ‘अक्षय से आखिरी बार 20 अक्तूबर को बात हुई थी। उस दौरान उसने हाल चाल लिया था। पहले मेरी फिर भाई की तबियत के बारे में पूछा।’
